Application Requirements and Procedure

A Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or equivalent in a natural science or a related engineering field is required, with at least a grade of 2.5 (German grading system).

For an application, the following material must be submitted:

  • Application form (applicaton.pdf).
  • Official B.Sc. (or equivalent) degree certificate.
  • Official transcript of B.Sc. studies with a list of courses taken and grades obtained.
  • If the B.Sc. will be obtained only between the application date and the start of the M.Sc. studies, an official certificate of the classes attended and the grades obtained must be provided. The B.Sc. certificate must be presented when registering for the program.
  • Demonstration that during the applicant‘s study course work in physics/geophysics (minimum of 8 credit points) and in chemistry/geochemistry (minimum of 8 credit points) has been performed.
  • CV in tabulated form.
  • Evidence of strong command of English, documented by a high school degree, a BSc, a thesis completed in English, or an English language certificate equivalent to the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
  • A statement explaining your interest in studying ‘Experimental Geosciences’, not to exceed 2 pages (12pt font, in English).
  • Contact information for a letter of reference by a former supervisor.

Please clarify details of the application with the coordinator of the program, Dr. Gerd Steinle-Neumann, prior to submission of the application. You should send your application documents to Dr. Gerd Steinle-Neumann, preferentially in electronic form as email attachment (original electronic files or scanned copies). Only documents in pdf- or graphic format (gif, jpg, png or similar) will be accepted.

Exceptionally qualified applicants will be admitted on basis of the material submitted. Other well-qualified applicants will participate in a selection process, consisting of a written and oral exam.

The M. Sc. program in Experimental Geosciences starts in both the winter (October) and summer semester (April) with application deadlines of June 15 (winter semester) and December 15 (summer semester).
